Do you feel that most elected officials only care about the voters when it's election time or if there is money involved? Sad but true. Of course, there are a few gems here and there but they are precious and rare. Politicians are so caught up in the hamster wheel of getting elected, re-elected, holding on to power and climbing the ladder that citizens become afterthoughts.
As you can imagine, our individual voices are muted amongst the megaphones of special interests, powerful lobbyists, and uber campaign contributors. They dismiss the silent majority, court our vote and move on.
In the political realms, those with far more experience understand that five calls on the same issue gets the staff to pay attention. 20 calls is a crisis. Are you surprised? That is because many complain but few dial a number and speak up. Such is our silence that our existence is forgotten unless they hear the ring of a phone.
Even though a legislator’s staff theoretically works for me, I was nervous when I made my first call. The issue was important but I was tripping over my words which is why I am excited about my brainchild: Call One Day (COD).
Each week I prepare a short script with all the information pertinent to leave a message or talk to a live person. When we speak in unison, they will listen. To a politician, one call expresses the concerns of 100 voters. This is a well known metric and so far, 200+ Floridians have joined this initiative. To an elected official, this is equivalent to 20,000 voters chiming in.
