Is that brass beneath the gold?
As Floridians continue to celebrate Governor Ron DeSantis, assuming his easy re-election in 2022, they are failing to notice the tarnish beneath the so-called golden standard of elections.
After canvassing 25 counties, including five of the major ones, Defend Florida uncovered that 50% of the registered voters fall into the category of the walking dead. As of September 21st, 2400+ affidavits attributed to ghost or phantom voters have been collected. A more detailed analysis shows these phantom votes may exceed 14% of the total votes cast in the 2020 Florida Elections:
Even more alarming than ghost registrations and phantom votes is the sober realization that some county Supervisor of Elections are not in control of the voter rolls. Notably, Manatee County outsources their data maintenance to a third party. In May, Defend Florida contacted SoE Michael Bennet with a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) request for information voter roll maintenance. Although Florida state law requires this information be available upon request, neither he nor deputy Sharon Steif were able to answer questions pertaining to the maintenance of 496 deceased or departed. Instead, they delayed their response until August, deferring to VR Systems who maintains the voter rolls.
Are there other counties operating as Manatee? Where else may voter roll maintenance be the hands of a vendor? Given the hurdles to perform what should seemingly be an easy and transparent task: clean-up the rolls – the inevitable conclusion is Florida has some brass beneath the gold.
How are the SoE’s removing inactive voters? Who has access to the login codes? What are the security protocols for maintaining the integrity of the voter roll registration? Floridians would be wise to ask their supervisor of elections for an answer – and hold them accountable. Otherwise, in 2022 the sunshine state may lament the loss of DeSantis … and more. After all, they are just south of Georgia in more ways than one.
