The power of the people: We live to fight another day
This is probably the choppiest Substack I've ever penned but I had to share some real good news! Before that, a bit of background. Once a bill is sponsored, it must navigate through two, three, or even four committees before it reaches presentation to the full chamber. If a bill faces defeat at any point along this path or fails to be placed on the agenda for discussion, it is deemed "killed in committee." Folks, I believe we can declare a collective victory. As you can see, HB721 was defeated in the House, and according to a senior Senate legislative aide, it has met the same fate in the Senate. Unless they (more about that in the next installment) attempt to sneak the language into another bill or engage in backroom deals, our collective efforts have ensured that we live to fight another year.
This monumental effort relied heavily on widespread participation. Grassroots leaders mobilized their members, and citizens from every corner of Florida responded by making phone calls, sending letters, or emails. Those with personal connections reached out directly to Representatives and Senators, while others traveled to Tallahassee this week to engage in face-to-face discussions with legislative aides. This serves as a powerful example of collective civic duty, as we recognize the dangers of having our voices silenced.
Fellow Floridians, we should take pride in our collective achievement. While similar battles are unfolding in 24 other states, we have successfully averted such measures here. Our vigilance and active participation is yielding tangible results.
Can we summon the same fervor to advocate for:
Ensuring that only US citizens can vote in Florida. We are facing a border crisis with hundreds of undocumented individuals being transported to Florida, and existing loopholes allow them to register to vote.
Addressing deficiencies in the chain of custody for Vote by Mail ballots. This includes instances where ballots are left unattended in custodians' vehicles overnight or over weekends, posing significant security risks.
Certifying our election hardware and software to meet current standards. With even the Pentagon falling victim to cyberattacks, how can we have confidence in our election equipment when our standards are outdated, dating back to 2005?
As the legislative session draws to a close, our only recourse to address these and many other pressing concerns is to urge Governor DeSantis to convene a special session: Revive HB1669, SB1602, and HD90412/SD 22-01427.

It is imperative that we act swiftly to implement much-needed election controls before the 2024 election. Let us not be complicit in allowing Florida to become the new Arizona.
