My grandfather left China in the early 20th century, escaping communism under rather traumatic circumstances. My parents left Venezuela in the 1990’s. The rampant government corruption laid the foundation for that country’s demise. As socioeconomic pressures increased, the lack of personal security went from bad to harrowing. The last straw was thieves boldly entering our home on a Sunday afternoon and tying up my father at gunpoint. Thankfully my mom was out running errands but my dad was terrified she would walk in while the robbers ransacked the house. After that incident, they sold our home, packed up a privileged life, and were one of the first to say adios to the land of the black gold. They did not envision the advent of socialism but once Chavez amended the Venezuelan constitution (which had been inspired by America’s document) and corrupted the voting apparatus, he and his cronies were poised to maintain their grip on power. In less than one generation, the country of my childhood is no more.
One could say that my family has been one step ahead of the communist agenda, but this all took place in developing third world nations. Hence, I am astonished to be personally involved with a political system gone rogue in the United States. Politics define policy, and policies impact people. Voting is the paramount privilege of a free society which is why we sounded the alarm to the election DIS-integrity bill that expeditiously passed both chambers of the Florida legislature and was quietly signed by Ron DeSantis.
As a naturalized American, I experienced the legal pathway towards citizenship. Arguably, I was a bargain since my parents footed my education bill all the way through graduate school. To boot, I was already bilingual, so the US government invested not a cent and I was a taxpayer by the time I became a citizen. Because I understand both sides of the equation, I predict the pillars of American society are going to crumble with the unrestrained influx of immigrants, many whom do not speak the language, are likely to be illiterate, and are not the healthiest bunch of people.
Mismanagement and corruption of governments around the world created conditions where everyone wants to come to America. With Title 42’s expiration the border crisis is poised to mushroom … since it has been well advertised the US welcome package includes bus rides, air fares, hotel lodging, and other amenities, there are caravans making their way from South America. This massive population shift will be managed by the incapable hands of the current administration and by the time the actual effects of this tsunami are visible, it will be too late. Votes matter. Election security matters.
Demonstrating either disconcerting shortsightedness or a total lack of geopolitical savoir faire, the election bill passed by Florida’s House and Senate does not even address the citizenship verification issue. The loopholes used to allow non-citizens to register were woefully ignored while allowing assisted living, student ID’s or debit cards as acceptable forms of identification. Despite numerous attempts to communicate this concern and insistent urging for a bill amendment (including seven hours of my personal time on a conference call) not a single pre-emptive action was enacted by a predominantly Republican legislature. As someone who is deeply enmeshed in this election bill crisis, my impression is that reasoning was abandoned and replaced by “instructions”.
America is a welcoming country and the pathway towards becoming a citizen allows sufficient time and knowledge to appreciate what this country offers. As an immigrant, my heart hurts for those seeking a better life. As an American, I know the character of this nation will be forever changed if we do not uphold the core values enshrined in the Constitution, including the many provisions implying that only US Citizens can cast a vote.
Instead of building upon the gains obtained in the 2022 election bill, SB 7050 erodes those advances and leaves doors wide open to commit electoral malfeasance. The system in Florida and all other key states is already capable of delivering a predetermined outcome but there is still a pretense that our vote matters. Unless immediate action and involvement is taken NOW, our vote in 2024 will be meaningless. If there is a lesson to be learned from Venezuela, it is that the will of the people is no longer relevant and the powers that thrive on corruption will do whatever it takes to maintain the status quo. Many call this the great awakening but for those who’ve already experienced the future, this is the great insomnia.
