In the face of so much uncertainty and turmoil in the world, it's easy to feel helpless and overwhelmed. Allow me to tell you about yesterday’s victory that proves just how much power we have as citizens when we come together and get involved in our communities.
A few months ago, our local mayor proposed a measure to extend city council terms from three to four years, ostensibly to allow council members more time to learn the job and less time spent on campaigning. While it may sound reasonable, some were concerned this could lead to cozy relationships with special interests and developers.
Many mayors have prior experience serving as city commissioners. With representatives in Congress elected every two years, it seems feasible that a city commissioner can prepare for the job prior to being elected and learn the ropes within the first few months. Conversely, what happens if you get a bad apple? Such an extension would diminish citizens' ability to outvote a rogue element. These concerns are not unfounded, particularly given the recent scandal involving a former mayor's removal and charged for misusing public funds.
Since everyone and their mother is moving to Florida, the influx of new residents has increasing pressure from developers. It's crucial that we keep a close eye on our elected officials to ensure they are working in the best interest of our communities. The current mayor is an affable fellow and has served for nine years on City Council, no complaints about his performance. Nonetheless, this initiative seemed rather odd. It was up for vote on March 14, a time when most citizens are unaware there is even an election. Moreover, it was the only measure on the ballot, and he spent $255K to put it up for vote.
It appeared the measure was on track to pass - until a handful of concerned citizens took action. They spread the word to their friends and neighbors, urging them to vote “NO”. And guess what? It worked! Thanks to their efforts, the measure was defeated by almost 60% of voters.
While the turnout to vote was dismally low, this is a shining example of how ordinary people can make a real difference in their communities. By getting involved, speaking out, and becoming part of the solution, we can shape the future of our cities and towns in a way that reflects our values and priorities. And it's not just about defeating bad ideas - it's about coming together to build a better future for all of us.
So, if you're feeling disillusioned or disconnected from the political process, remember this story. Every little win counts, and your voice and vote matter. Get involved, start conversations with your friends and neighbors, and let's work together to create the kind of world we want to live in.
"The power of the people is stronger than the people in power." - Wael Ghonim
Father in Heaven,
We adore you and are in awe of your profound mercy. Despite the difficulties facing mankind, you have purchased our eternal salvation and for that we can dwell in peace. We ask you forgive our sins and transgressions, especially for those we commit with ignorance.
Lord, thank you for the comforts that surround us: our homes, our food, family, health, and we ask that you bless those less fortunate. Pour your Holy Spirit within us so we may come together as a church to address the pressing needs of our community. Lord, you do not ask for numbers, but you do ask for action. Just as Joshua’s remnant stomped on the walls of Jericho, let us occupy the spaces so our presence can be felt and all may witness your glory within us.
In the precious name of our savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
Amen.
Congratulations. Well done.
