Do you have any knowledge and comments about the "president" of Venezuela during the 1990's prior to Hugo Chavez?

The last time I was in Venezuela was in 1991, then President Carlos Andres Perez was in charge. Chaves tried a coup d'etat on him and was imprisoned. I believe after CAP there was another president and then Chavez was elected. During the preceding decade, corruption was rampant and the people were ready for a change. Chavez was democratically elected the first time. Unfortunately, his reforms, and the general corruption of his government did nothing to remedy the country and instead decimated it. He later rigged the elections to remain in power. Whilst I lived there it was one of the top 10 economies in the world. So sad.
