For 23 days, Glenn Baker languished in a Florida prison, not knowing the nature of the charges filed against him. Shackled and seated in the back of a van, he was transferred to Rowan, North Carolina. Accused of receiving property under false pretenses, he remained incarcerated for another 50 days. During the discovery process, he learned that his former business partner, once a pastor, had fabricated and falsified the information used to arrest him. Three years prior, Glenn had sold him the business and moved away. The charges constructed against him had taken place seven months after he sold his share in the business.
Unless he paid $25,000 to be released, Glenn would have to wait six months to enter his argument. He could also wait another year in jail to enter a "not guilty" plea at trial. Alternatively, despite his innocence, he could claim to be guilty and possibly be released on probation … nothing was guaranteed. His appointed public defender was ineffective at best. At worst, he was exploiting the system, allowing an innocent man to remain unfairly incarcerated. Given the evident failure of the judicial infrastructure, Glenn took matters into his own hands. He called the District Attorney himself. The next day he walked out: the charges did not and could not hold ground.
Depressed and despondent, Glenn lost not only his finances, his eyesight and health, but also his faith in a system that was evidently broken. This travesty took place in 2017. Six years later, Glenn finds himself in a blessed place. While he would never want to relive his jail experience, the resilience developed through such devastation prepared him to fight in his own unique way.
Although Glenn had always enjoyed singing, he never pursued his creative talent with a passion. Witnessing the drastic imposition of mandates, masks, and isolation during the cultural shift initiated in 2020, he received divine inspiration for the lyrics of his first single, "No New Normal.” In faith, he heeded his calling and has now become a Nashville recording artist. I think you’ll find that Glen captures our sentiments, listen to his recording here:
Glenn's second single, "Soldier Strong," is set to release in September on national radio. While it speaks for veterans, it is a song for all fighters. Ahem. I just listened and can hardly wait for you to hear it on the radio! It's evident that Glenn Baker's journey has been marked by challenges and triumphs. The injustices he faced in the legal system and his perseverance in seeking justice is commendable. His songs reflect his personal growth, resilience, and the idea of rising above adversity.
Glenn's decision to use his musical talent to express the struggles we face aligns with the tradition of artists using their work to shed light on important societal issues. His journey is a reminder that even in the face of injustice and hardship, we all have the capacity to find our purpose and make a difference in the world.
God assigns us missions that are not necessarily in our plans. Be not afraid, this is not a time for fear.
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Mathew 10:28
Father in Heaven,
Your love for us is profound and individual, recognizing that each of us is a universe in our own right. Father, we are deeply thankful for your unyielding presence, your unwavering faithfulness, and the times you carry us when we find it hard to move forward.
In this pivotal moment, you have raised men and women to serve as your hands, feet, and voice. On our own, we are insignificant, but through us, may your magnificence shine brilliantly, consistently, and with breathtaking impact.
Lord, bestow your blessings upon all those who stand firm and offer their treasures, time, and talents to combat the forces that strive to manipulate and undermine our humanity. As your children, we embody your divine essence; we are the living manifestation of your creation.
In the name of our savior, Jesus Christ, we pray.
Amen
