Inside Florida’s Sausage Factory
Slimy machinations from the swamp, fake endorsements and counterfeit guides.
A quiet corner of Florida is suddenly the epicenter of a seismic political battle, where the race for a state Senate seat has unleashed an unprecedented spending spree. With over 30 mailers flooding 100,000 voters' mailboxes and TV ads blitzing the Olympics, conservative estimates suggest campaign expenditures have already soared to $7+ million.
Voters are confused and disgusted at the acrimonious mail being sent almost on a daily basis but few understand the stakes in this race. Let’s start with the big picture.
With a GDP of $1.5 trillion, Florida ranks among the top 20 economies globally, comparing to countries like the Netherlands or Indonesia and outpacing nations like Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. The 40 state Senators who shape this economic titan's legislative future wield immense power. Enter Tom Leek, an insurance industry insider turned politician whose net worth skyrocketed from $850K to over $15 million during his time in the Florida House.
Supported by PACs (Political Action Committees) flush with industry cash, including "Living Life with Purpose," Leek now vies for the Senate, armed with endorsements from Florida's political elite like Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General Ashley Moody. His ascent coincides with the controversial HB 837, a bill that critics argue tilts the scales in favor of insurers, leaving citizens to bear the burden. Is it coincidence that HB837 was signed into law by DeSantis in March 2023, taking immediate effect right before his run for the GOP Presidential nomination?
In this high-stakes game, big business is playing for keeps, and voters are caught in the crossfire, bombarded by relentless, vitriolic campaigning. The question lingers: how much of this political clout is fueled by PAC money?
Meanwhile, the trial lawyers, reeling from recent tort reform and insurance legislation, launched a campaign to derail Tom Leek’s political ambitions. Enter David Shoar, a former sheriff turned private investigator for a law firm linked to trial lawyers. Shoar is supported by "The Truth Matters," a PAC tied to trial lawyers, but his candidacy raises concerns due to his controversial past, including a decade-old case involving the suspicious death of a young mother and alleged use of pot and driving while intoxicated.

Leek and Shoar are both backed by powerful interests—insurance giants, developers, and trial lawyers. The wild card in this race is Gerry James, a grassroots favorite who previously ran for the same seat in 2022. James, rejecting special interest money, is running a campaign fueled by citizen volunteers and has earned endorsements from figures like Mike Lindell, Sarah Palin, Alex Newman, Bryson DeChambeau, Steve Friend, and the St. Johns and Putnam Republican Executive Committees, among other conservative groups.
In July, a poll showed Leek leading with 43%, James close behind at 38%, and Shoar trailing at 18%. Shoar considered dropping out to support James but received an unexpected Trump endorsement on his Truth Social page. However, insiders have disclosed that Trump may not be aware of this endorsement, as he is focused on his own campaign and legal battles. Official sources like Ballotpedia do not confirmed a Trump endorsement for Shoar or Leek, both whom are attempting to associate themselves with the highly sought after Trump brand. Unfortunately, elements in his campaign may be lending the boss’ name to facilitating a game of shadows and mirrors.
But the plot thickens. In June the St. Johns REC voted to endorse a slate of grassroots candidates and printed a voter guide that volunteers have been hand-delivering to voters. James' and other candidates growing momentum has led the St. Johns Republican establishment to escalate their dirty tricks, including printing counterfeit voter guides to confuse voters. Recently, locals began receiving nearly identical guides mailed without a return address.
As expected, the conflicting guides have caused confusion and frustration among voters, showcasing the slimy tactics of the Republican establishment in St. Johns.
Volunteers from all corners of Florida have joined his campaign and participated in “A Day of Door-knocking” reaching over 3000 households in the past few weeks. In this highly Republican corner of Florida, the candidate who prevails in the Primaries will be the de-facto senator. Stay tuned as this drama unfolds, and pray that Gerry James is elected on August 20th. A victory for this grassroots candidate, despite millions in opposition spending, would shake up the status quo and signal a return of power to the people. Pray!
Father Almighty,
In this Jericho moment, we have sounded the horns and marched across the four counties where this vital race is unfolding. We now surrender this battle to You, trusting in Your warring angels and the hosts of heaven to see Your will be done.
Lord, we recognize this as a spiritual battle against deceit, corruption, and power. We are grateful to stand as warriors in this earthly struggle, strong and courageous in spirit. We thank you for this opportunity to participate in the affairs of our governance while still being physically and mentally protected by the blessings of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus, we walk in Your shadow, following the path You’ve cleared for us.
In your name, we pray and trust.
Amen.
"When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city."

This is a clip from mega Trial Lawyer John Morgan (who is not necessarily my cup of tea) but he provides an accurate summary of the situation. Clearly, there is no love:
