I’m a relatively normal soccer mom who is inordinately upset about the 2020 elections. Having the country of my childhood decimated beyond repair makes me particularly sensitive to the consequences of corrupt self-serving leadership. I just can’t stomach the notion of the USA becoming the next Venezuela nor can I imagine our lives in Florida had Gillum been the Governor instead of DeSantis.
If you ever thought you can't make a difference, let me invite you to readjust your expectations. About four weeks ago I summarized the key requirements to shore up the election process in Florida. Contrary to what you may think, the Sunshine state has a significant amount of dead, ghost and phantom voters.
How did I know what to write in this brief? I volunteered with Defend Florida, a grassroots organization that has identified voting irregularities through canvassing and data analysis.
The brief was intended to communicate effectively with state representatives. Subsequently I found myself redlining and re-writing House Bill 7061 with another concerned Floridian. She understood the law while I clacked away on my keyboard.
Both of us were disbelief that an accountant and an engineer (that would be me) were crafting legislation. The bill was already in appropriations, the window to amend was narrow and everyone else was occupied elsewhere. We were in tears: it was difficult and our lack of experience was frustrating. This was like cramming for finals using a foreign language textbook.
Nonetheless our effort, combined with the monumental work of many other volunteers, got the attention of a key legislator. He decided to carry some of our proposed amendments.

There are many other twists and turns to this journey, but the result was being heard and new legislation being passed. There is still much more work ahead but we now are more experienced to Defend Florida in the next session.
Even more encouraging is that our work is being observed and will be used as a model template for similar action in other states. Local Action = National Impact.
