Florida: From the Gold Standard to Tarnished Trophy?
The Sunshine State has never scored more than a C+
For those deeply involved in the advocacy of securing Florida’s electoral process, it’s vexing to hear public servants declare, “Florida is the gold standard for elections.” If you can remember the days of classroom chalk and blackboards, hearing this statement is about as pleasant as scraping your nails down one. Conversely, many recall how Florida’s “hanging chad” debacle made the state the laughingstock of the country during the contested 2000 presidential election. Since then, Florida has made significant improvements, but let’s be clear, Florida has never been ranked #1 in the US for Election Integrity.
In December 2021, the Heritage Foundation published a scorecard assessing state election laws. This scorecard evaluates 47 criteria across 12 categories of election integrity and is frequently updated as states reform and adjust their laws. In 2021, Florida earned a grade of C+, accumulating 78 points out of 100, and stood third in the nation.
Furthermore, as other states have progressed in fortifying their electoral processes, Florida's ranking has dropped. It currently sits at #7, having lost 4 points since 2021. I've included a link below for further detail. Utilize this information when communicating with legislators, supervisors of elections, and county commissioners – it's crucial to correct their mistaken talking points.
Please take a moment to complete this brief survey regarding election security, especially if you vote in Florida. Your feedback is invaluable. Thank you!
I dare say this will be the name of the new 2024 election infection:

DeSantis seems to have forgotten his commitment to the people of Florida to serve as Governor instead of galivanting around the country to defeat a popular and unfairly persecuted former president. Loyalty is important, but principles and campaign promises matter too, and when he signed the election law which included an interesting and irrelevant provision to allow him to run for president without resigning from the governorship, a lot of people lost faith in that commitment. If one isn't faithful in small things, how can we expect them to be better in the larger ones?
Very sad indeed. I’m wondering how the people in FL feel about DeSantis throwing his hat in the presidential ring. In light of his decisions for FL, especially in regards to election integrity, one has to wonder what’s behind it.
